Sivananda Yoga is a classical and holistic approach to Hatha Yoga that emphasizes not only physical postures (asanas) but also proper breathing (pranayama), relaxation (savasana), diet, and meditation.
This practice follows a structured format that is consistent across its international centres. The principles outlined by Swami Vishnu-Devananda provide a comprehensive framework for achieving physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
The five principles of Sivananda Yoga are as follows:
1. Proper Exercise (Asanas): Asanas are the physical postures practised in yoga. They help stretch and tone the body, improve flexibility, and promote physical health.
2. Proper Breathing (Pranayama): Pranayama involves breath control techniques that help regulate the flow of prana (life force energy) in the body. It enhances respiratory health, calms the mind, and supports meditation practice.
Proper Relaxation (Savasana): Savasana, also known as corpse pose, is a relaxation technique practised at the end of a yoga session. It allows the body and mind to relax deeply, facilitating the integration of the benefits gained from the preceding practices.
3. Proper Diet (Vegetarian): Sivananda Yoga advocates for a vegetarian diet as part of its holistic approach to health. This diet supports physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual development.
4. Meditation and Prayer (Dhyana and Vedanta): Meditation and prayer are integral to Sivananda Yoga, helping practitioners cultivate inner peace, self-awareness, and spiritual growth. Vedanta, the philosophical teachings of the Upanishads, provides a framework for understanding the nature of reality and the self.
The teachings of Sivananda Yoga have been disseminated worldwide through various centres and publications, including Swami Vishnu-Devananda's classic text, "The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga." This book is an accessible introduction to yoga practice, offering guidance on asanas, pranayama, savasana, diet, and meditation techniques.
Overall, Sivananda Yoga offers a holistic system for individuals seeking physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual awakening, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit.
